Artist Statement
Jonathan “JayWAN” Pattiwael is an Indonesian‑American choreographer from the global Hip‑Hop civilization, weaving an ancestral performance lineage with the form’s raw street power. Their research navigates the intersection of Hip‑Hop/House culture and contemporary dance, remixing these vernacular forms to investigate embodied identity and the immigrant experience. As director of organi city, JayWAN crafts performances as physical excavations, turning transcultural negotiation into dynamic ecosystems for marginalized narratives, a ritual ground for collective healing. organi city fosters sociopolitical dialogue through the body, challenging societal hierarchies by excavating the architecture of the unspoken.

Reanimation
Reanimation is a story between two exceptional characters who are discovering each other for the first time within a surreal world. The duet goes on a journey of discovery as they realize how they’re connected, as one dancer reanimates the other. Will they figure out who they are, what they represent and what it means to be alive?

Kebangkitan pt 1
Organi City and Gamelan Lipi Awan joined forces to plant a new seed. Featuring original
composition by Gordon Jones for Balinese gamelan and contemporary Indonesian dance,
this collaboration honors traditional forms while allowing them to evolve—resurrecting
ancestral sound and movement into a living, breathing conversation for today. The piece
culminates in a duel between Srikandi and Mustakaweni, two mythical figures from
ancient Javanese lore reimagined through a contemporary physical language.

Honest the Expression
"This solo evolves with my personal journey in negotiating identity as a Southeast Asian American immigrant in the margins of US society. The solo is an expression of my experience as a street dancer while going to graduate school (2016-19) in a [still] white dance world and experiencing racism being constantly harassed by campus police because I look like an inner-city street kid and fit the 'common offender' profile. The music is mixed live by me." - JayWAN

Antidote
This is a remedy for the emptiness of existence. A love letter for my dearest Kathleen. Kathleen Hermesdorf was my mentor, friend, teacher, and wellspring of encouragement. Her way of being is how I approach my craft as well as how I try to be when I guide others. She was an abundant mover with a rockstar ferocity and a magnet for compassionate people. She helped me
embrace the bizarre and together we danced in our glorious sweat through our corpo-realities. Her artistry and generosity made art possible for so many artists and communities. Kathleen instilled in me an exhilarating freedom and a unique sense of belonging, continuously flowing into the infinite future, beautifully bizarre.
